Charles A. Kirby, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Charles Kirby is a highly trained physician and surgeon who has extensive experience and expertise in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of a variety of eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and oculoplastics. He was also the impetus behind the Chattanooga Eye Institute’s involvement in groundbreaking clinical trial research.  Chattanooga Eye Institute has been involved in numerous clinical trials which have facilitated new medicines being available in the USA including: Xiidra, Durezol, and Simbrinza.

 

Dr. Kirby is the only surgeon in the Chattanooga area to have received certification by the American Board of Eye Surgery in Cataract and Implant surgery. He is also certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. In 1993 he was chosen as the “Doctor’s Doctor” by Chattanooga area physicians. He considers this his greatest honor. 

 

Dr. Kirby is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Tennessee Medical Association, American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. 

 

After graduating first in the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, he attended the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He did his internship at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. His Ophthalmology residency was done at the prestigious combined program at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham.

R. Evan Levy, MD 

Dr. Levy is a specialist in a wide array of eyelid and orbit disorders, offering both medical and surgical treatment options. As a fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeon, his focus encompasses Moh's reconstruction, thyroid eye disease, eyelid malposition, and cosmetic periocular surgery. 

Dr. Levy's journey began with his undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama, followed by medical school at the University of South Alabama. After completing an internship in internal medicine, he pursued his passion for ophthalmology with residency training at the University of North Carolina. Driven by his keen interest in facial reconstruction and orbital surgery, he further honed his skills through a fellowship at UT Southwestern in Oculoplastics and orbital reconstruction.

A dedicated professional, Dr. Levy is an active member of prestigious organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Tennessee Medical Association, and the Hamilton Medical Society. Outside of his medical practice, he cherishes moments with his wife, two children, and two golden retrievers. Dr. Levy finds joy in cooking, learning and improving at playing guitar, exploring nature through hiking, and playing golf.

Barrett Thompson, MD

Dr. Thompson is an ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract and refractive surgery including the use of advanced technology lenses. He also treats glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, as well as diseases of the eyelid and cornea. 

Dr. Thompson graduated from college at The University of Tennessee – Knoxville majoring in Chemistry. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and received the chemistry departmental award. He then went on to attend medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where he was chosen to join the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. He completed his intern year at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He attended residency at Hamilton Eye Institute where he served as chief resident.

Growing up in Cleveland, TN, most of his family resides in and around the area. The beauty of the area and sense of community drew him back home after training. In his time away from work, he enjoys playing music, tennis, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

 OUR PRACTICE 

The practice that became the Chattanooga Eye Institute was started in 1912 by Dr. Samuel Long, father of Dr. Ira Long, making it the oldest ophthalmology practice in the Chattanooga area. In 1994, Dr. Charles Kirby took over and changed the name to the Chattanooga Eye Institute. Since that time, Dr. Kirby and his talented staff have greatly expanded the scope of services offered while remaining at the forefront of new technology, treatments and procedures.

 

Now offering advanced cataract, and other laser surgeries, groundbreaking clinical trials, oculoplastic surgery and procedures as well as a full line of glasses and contact lenses, the Chattanooga Eye Institute has a well-deserved reputation for being a leader in the field of eye care and overall eye health.
